They're Repeating across America What They Performed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The evident and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity something of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best Among Us

So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition against Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or not?

America is best defended, to put it differently, through connection to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest pretending the worst of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both meekness and belief, a combination that committed national faithful should embrace.
